What Is Tallow Balm? A Plain Guide to Grass-Fed Tallow and Olive Oil
Tallow balm is a rich, water-free skin balm made from rendered beef fat. At Reyic, most jars are simply grass-fed tallow and olive oil, handmade in the USA. Some add a named essential oil blend, and Au Naturel is unscented. Here’s the short version, with links if you want to go deeper.

What tallow is
Tallow is purified beef fat. It has been used on skin for generations, long before pump bottles and long ingredient lists. We use tallow from grass-fed cattle, and we explain what that label should mean in grass-fed vs conventional tallow balm.
What’s in a Reyic jar
Most Reyic balms are made from:
- Grass-fed tallow
- Olive oil
- In scented jars, a named essential oil blend listed on the product page
Each product page lists its full ingredients. There’s no water, which is why it’s a balm and not a lotion; why balms have no water covers what that means. If you’re used to wax-based salves, beeswax in balms explains how they differ.
How it differs from lotion and salve
Most lotions are mostly water, with emulsifiers and preservatives to hold everything together. A balm skips the water, so it feels richer and you need less of it. Many salves use wax to stay firm; a tallow and olive oil balm stays soft in the jar and softens further with the warmth of your hands.
- Lotion: mostly water, thin, quick to spread
- Wax salve: firm, holds its shape in a tin or tube
- Tallow balm: rich, water-free, a little goes a long way
Who uses it
People reach for tallow balm when they want a shorter ingredient list, or one jar for dry face, hands, elbows and feet instead of several bottles. It’s also a common choice for people who prefer unscented products, which is why we make Au Naturel.
How it’s made
Raw fat has to be rendered and strained before it’s ready for skin. We walk through that process in how tallow is rendered.
Does it smell?
Au Naturel has no added scent, and the scented jars smell of their named oils.
How to use it
- Start with a pea-sized amount
- Warm it between your fingers until it softens
- Press it into clean, dry skin
- Add more only where skin still feels dry

Which jar to start with
If you’re new to tallow or prefer no scent, start with Au Naturel. If you already enjoy essential oils, the scented jars use the same base with a blend added. Patch test any new balm on a small area first.
