A tallow balm is about as simple as skincare gets: fat and oil in a jar, with no water. That simplicity makes it easy to care for. A few habits keep it fresh and help one jar go a long way.
Where to keep it
- Store it somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight, like a drawer or cabinet
- Keep it away from the stove, a sunny windowsill, or a hot car
- Close the lid tightly after each use
- Keep water out of the jar, and scoop with clean, dry fingers
Because a balm contains no water, the main things that shorten its life are heat, light, air, and anything wet getting into it.
Why the texture changes
Tallow and olive oil respond to temperature. In a warm room the balm softens and can turn almost liquid. In the cold it firms up. Both are normal.
If a jar melts and sets again, the texture can turn a little grainy. That’s the fats cooling at different speeds, not a sign the balm has gone bad, and the grains melt as soon as they touch your skin.
How to tell if it’s past its best
Fresh tallow balm smells faint and mild, or like its named essential oils if it’s scented. If a jar develops a sharp, sour, or crayon-like smell, the fats have started to oxidize and it’s time for a new one. If you’re unsure about a jar, get in touch and we’ll help.
Getting the most from each jar
- Start small. A fingertip’s worth is usually plenty.
- Warm it between your fingers until it turns glossy.
- Press it into slightly damp skin rather than rubbing hard.
- Add a little more only where skin still feels dry.
Many people keep one jar by the sink and another in a bag. Smaller amounts, used often, tend to work better than one thick layer.

FAQ
Does tallow balm need to be refrigerated?
No. A cool, dark spot is enough. The fridge will make it very firm, though some people like that in summer.
My balm melted in the mail. Is it ruined?
Usually not. Let it set somewhere cool with the lid on. The texture may be slightly different, but the ingredients are the same.
