Empty Jar Guarantee — Use the whole jar. If it doesn’t help, we’ll refund you. · Handmade in the USA
Dry hotel air, long flights, and cold or windy trips are all good reasons to bring your balm along. A little planning makes it easy. Here’s how to pack it, whether you’re flying or driving.
Carry-on or checked bag?
TSA limits liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in carry-on bags to containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, packed together in one quart-sized bag. Anything in a larger container goes in checked baggage. You can read the rule on TSA’s liquids, aerosols, and gels page.
- A full 4 oz jar is over the carry-on limit
- Pack a full 4 oz jar in your checked bag
- For your carry-on, bring a small amount in a travel container of 3.4 oz or less, inside your quart-sized bag
Packing a small amount
- Choose a small travel container that holds 3.4 oz or less and closes tightly.
- Wash it and let it dry completely, since water doesn’t belong in a balm.
- Use a clean, dry spoon or small spatula to scoop in what you need.
- Take only enough for the trip. A thin layer goes a long way.
- Label the container so it’s easy to spot at security and in your bag.
Heat, cold, and softening
Tallow and olive oil respond to temperature, so your balm may soften on a hot day or firm up on a cold one. Both are normal. For what to expect and how to store it, see how to store and use a tallow balm.
Using it on the road
- After a hotel shower: apply to slightly damp skin, as you would at home
- On a flight: keep your travel container in an easy-to-reach pocket for hands and lips
- On cold or windy days: a thin layer before you head out can help skin feel more comfortable
- Before bed: a good time for a slightly richer layer on hands and feet
Driving instead?
- There’s no size limit in the car, so the full jar can come along
- Keep it out of direct sun and off the dashboard
- Keep the lid on tight between uses
Flying outside the US?
Rules at other airports can differ. Check with your airline or the airport before you pack.
