Yes. Many people finish a shave with a little balm. Freshly shaved skin can feel tender, so the key is to keep it gentle and simple. Here’s a calm routine that works for face and body, whether you shave in the morning or at night.
A good shave to start
- Shave after a shower, when skin and hair are warm and soft
- Use a shaving cream or gel
- Shave in the direction the hair grows
- Rinse the razor after each swipe, and let it dry fully between shaves
- Change the blade, or toss a disposable razor, after five to seven shaves
Right after you shave
- Rinse off any leftover shaving cream with lukewarm water.
- Pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Don’t rub.
- Warm a very small amount of balm between your fingertips.
- Press it gently into your skin rather than rubbing it in.
Less is more here. A thin layer feels comfortable. A thick one can feel heavy.
Why unscented is the best fit
Freshly shaved skin is more likely to sting, and essential oils may sting on it. That’s why we suggest Au Naturel after shaving. It’s just tallow and olive oil, with no essential oils or added fragrance. Save scented jars for other times and places.
Where to use it
- Face: press a little into the shaved area. For more on balm and the face, see can you use tallow balm on your face?
- Legs: apply after your shower, while skin is still slightly damp
- Underarms: go carefully. This skin is delicate, so start with a tiny amount on a small area and see how it feels
Wherever you shave, the same idea applies: a small amount, pressed in gently, on clean skin. On larger areas like legs, a little still goes a long way. For the skin below your jaw, read tallow balm on your neck and chest.
Before sunscreen or makeup
- Give the balm a few minutes to settle
- Blot any extra with a tissue
- Then apply sunscreen or makeup as usual
If a product doesn’t sit well over balm, use a little less next time, or save the balm for evening shaves.
Patch test first
- Try a small amount on a small patch of freshly shaved skin.
- Wait a day and see how your skin feels.
- If anything stings, burns, or feels uncomfortable, stop using it.
Every person’s skin is different, so let how yours feels guide you.
FAQ
Can I use a scented jar after shaving?
We suggest the unscented jar on freshly shaved skin, since essential oils may sting. Scented jars are better kept for skin you haven’t just shaved.
How long should I wait before sunscreen or makeup?
A few minutes is usually enough. Blot any extra first so the next layer goes on smoothly.
Will it feel greasy?
Not if you use a small amount. If your skin feels slick, you’ve used more than you need. Blot and use less next time.
Using it beyond your jaw? Read what the same balm does for dry, cracked hands, or keep a jar of Au Naturel by the sink.
