Empty Jar Guarantee — Use the whole jar. If it doesn’t help, we’ll refund you. · Handmade in the USA
Flip a lotion bottle and you’ll often see one opaque word: fragrance (or parfum). It can stand for a cocktail of scent chemicals the brand never has to unpack. Essential oils are different — when they’re listed by name — but “natural scent” still isn’t automatically gentle.
At Reyic we use purpose-driven essential oil blends in scented jars, and none at all in Au Naturel. Here’s how to tell intent from filler.
What “fragrance” usually means
On many labels, fragrance is a black box. It may include dozens of components chosen for shelf scent, not for a short relationship with reactive skin. You can’t evaluate what you can’t see.
That opacity is useful for mass-market products. It’s less useful if you’ve ever had a headache, itch, or flare after a “fresh” smelling cream.
What purpose-driven essential oils are for
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts. In a thoughtful balm, they’re chosen for a reason — calming, invigorating, grounding — not just to cover up a base. You should see them named on the product page (for example, lavender and vetiver in Calm Your Nerves, or peppermint-forward notes in Vitalize).
They’re still potent. “Plant-based” does not mean risk-free. If scent has ever bothered you, skip them.
When unscented is the smarter start
If your skin is hypersensitive, fragrance-averse, or you’re introducing tallow for the first time, start with a jar that has no essential oils. Reyic’s Au Naturel is grass-fed / finished tallow and olive oil only — handmade in the USA, short list, nothing to decode in the scent department. The same thinking applies to a fresh tattoo, which is why our tattoo aftercare guide recommends Au Naturel only.
You can always add a scented jar later if your skin stays calm and you want aroma with a clear purpose.
How to read the jar without the hype
- Look for named oils — lavender, peppermint, frankincense — not only “fragrance.”
- Ask what the blend is for — calm, energy, or just “smells nice”?
- Patch-test every new scent on a quiet area of skin.
- Default to unscented when in doubt.
- Ignore miracle language — balms moisturize; they don’t replace medical care.
FAQ
Are essential oils safer than synthetic fragrance?
Not automatically. They’re different. Named oils are more transparent; they can still irritate. Choose based on your skin, not the marketing.
Which Reyic balm has no essential oils?
Au Naturel — tallow and olive oil only.
Can I mix scented and unscented?
Yes. Many people keep Au Naturel for face or reactive days and a scented jar for hands or evenings — if essential oils already agree with them.
