Two very different ingredients often end up doing a similar job in a jar: sitting on the skin and helping hold moisture in. One is petrolatum, better known as petroleum jelly. The other is tallow, the rendered fat that Reyic balms are built on. Here’s what each one is, without the scare stories.

    What petrolatum is

Petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons produced during petroleum refining. Cosmetic grades are highly refined. It forms a film on the skin that slows water loss, which is why it shows up in so many ointments and lotions, including many used on new tattoos. Our tattoo aftercare guide covers a tallow-based alternative.

It is inexpensive, shelf-stable, and consistent from batch to batch. Those are real advantages for mass production.

    What tallow is

Tallow is rendered beef fat. It is made mostly of fatty acids such as oleic, palmitic, and stearic acid, and it was a common skincare and soap ingredient long before petroleum products existed.

Reyic uses grass-fed / finished tallow and blends it with organic extra virgin olive oil. The result is a balm that melts at skin temperature and presses in rather than sitting as a slick layer.

    Side by side

    • Source: petrolatum comes from crude oil; tallow comes from cattle
    • Composition: petrolatum is hydrocarbons; tallow is fats (triglycerides) of fatty acids
    • Feel: petrolatum stays on top as a film; tallow softens with body heat
    • Why brands choose it: petrolatum for cost and consistency; tallow for a short, whole-ingredient list

    Why some people choose tallow

For many shoppers the reason is simple: they want ingredients they can trace to a farm rather than a refinery, and a list short enough to read in one breath. That’s a preference, not a medical claim. Petrolatum isn’t poison, and tallow isn’t magic. They’re different choices.

    FAQ

    Is petrolatum unsafe?

Cosmetic-grade petrolatum is widely used. Choosing tallow is about source and simplicity, not about labeling petrolatum as dangerous.

    Does tallow feel greasy?

A little goes a long way. Warm a small amount between your fingertips and press it into slightly damp skin.
